Clydey Cottages Crusaders became the first ever winners of the Dickie Wyre indoor cricket tournament held at Cardigan Leisure Centre on the weekend.

This inaugural competition organised by Llechryd Cricket Club in memory of their former club stalwart attracted three teams namely Clydey Cottages Crusaders captain by Steve Smith, Drewy’s Daioni Dragons captained by Drewy Davies and The Canllefaes Half Dozen captained by Andrew Fletcher.

Each team played each other and the two teams with the highest number of points after these games played out the final.

Drewy’s Daioni Dragons were first to bat and they took on Clydey Cottages Crusaders and went after the bowling attack from the off and there were an abundance of fours, sixes, shots into the ceiling and some thunderous drives into the walls.

The Dragons innings closed on 75 runs innings and their cavalier approach in which there were 17 dismissals overall proved a valuable lesson to the other teams as a more measured and cautious approach was adopted by all thereafter. By the end of the day, batsmen were becoming very skilled at the hit-and-run approach which was much more suitable for indoor cricket. No better examples of this approach were Richard Thorne and Andrew Fletcher.

Drewy’s Daioni Dragons couldn’t quite recover from their high risk approach in the first game and Clydey Cottages Crusaders cruised to victory with some smart batting and bowling by Tom Beard and Graham Keen.

The second and third games were tighter and came down to the last over to decide both. The final saw a clash between Clydey Cottages Crusaders and The Canllefaes Half Dozen. It was a cracking game with Canllefaes requiring 28 off the last over for victory but they were just edged out and Clydey Cottages Crusaders became the first winners of the Dickie Wyre plaque.

There were many good players on the day but talented Crymych club cricketer Richard Thorne was voted best player for his impressive batting and wicket-keeping.
