AERON AND LAMPETER GAIN NARROW WINS

Division 3 West C

Pantyffynnon 15 Aberaeron 18

A late penalty from Rhodri Jenkins helped seal the third win of the season for the seasiders and a win double over division three opponents Pantyffynnon.

The hosts who were determined to make amends for defeat earlier in the season came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and caught the visitors napping and they walked their way over for a try from a series of rolling mauls to register the first score. The extremely heavy conditions underfoot made life difficult but after the early setback, Aberaeron regrouped and let by skipper Tudur Jenkins the seasiders equalised on the half hour after Jenkins set up Niall Reed on the wing to cross in the corner.

The visitors continued to dominate as the half progressed with the front row trio of Downes, Wozencraft and Evans all making ground and they were duly rewarded when from flanker Dafydd Davies barged his way over from close range.

Just as the half was nearing its conclusion the visitors knocked on and the loose ball was hacked on up field and Pantyffynnon made the most of their good fortune to pounce for a try to level matters at the break.

The second period prove to be a far closer encounter with the hosts exerting heavy pressure in the opening quarter which forced Aberaeron to concede a third try from close range and as the conditions worsened it became a battle of attrition with the elements and ground conditions but it was Aberaeron who looked the more likely to score and they were eventual rewarded when flanker Aaron Lewis crowned a fine afternoon to claim a try.

With the result in the balance and the scores tied at 15-15, Rhodri Jenkins was presented with difficult opportunity to steal the verdict with a penalty wide out and he stepped up to the mark in difficult underfoot conditions to slot the ball through the posts for a narrow win.

Division 3 West B

Lampeter 19 Llandeilo 13

A late try deep into injury time sealed a narrow win for Lampeter against a Llandeilo team that could only just muster enough players to make the trip to the north road ground.

The Carmarthenshire team were forced to beg and borrow up to their permit limit with only 11 of their own men available for this fixture but they managed to get a full compliment by kick off.

The visitors who were on a five in a row losing sequence and who are experiencing very difficult times made a decent start and were ahead at the break by 3-0 thanks to a penalty from outside half Steff Roberts and they increased their lead when Jenkins finished off one of the best moves of the game, started by Dan Roberts and carried on by captain Matthew Davies and livewire scrum half Leighton Rees

But this lead didn’t last as Lampeter played it tight through their strong pack and from a succession of rolling mauls Guto Jones powered his way over for their opening try and this was followed up by a penalty try after the official in charge ran out of patience with the shenanigans at the scrum

Roberts kicked Llaneilo back into a 12-13 lead almost immediately and so it remained until the end of added time when Lampeter, who had shunned a few chances to kick at goal finally crossed after a succession of driving mauls when number eight Dafydd Jones barged his way over and the conversion was the final act of the game with Lampeter winning by 19-13.
