Cardigan scrum half Luke Rogers was the hero of the hour for his team as his personal tally which included a converted try and three penalties won the match for his high flying team.

There was more good news for the Cardi’s after they left the field as information filtered through to the Laugharne clubhouse that title rivals Pembroke had been beaten by St Clears at Crickmarren, which makes up for a recent draw against the Scarlets.

The visitors got off to a decent start with their forwards in the shape of number eight Colin Davies, flanker Gareth Clifford and hooker Bedwyr Davies and second row Rob Connolly driving hard and they were rewarded with a penalty which was slotted over by scrum half Rogers before Tom Jameson replied for Laugharne.

The hosts stand off added a second penalty on twenty minutes before Cardigan claimed their first try of the game when winger Alun Jenkins ghosted his way over after some good work by his colleagues in the pack.

The hosts hit back just before the break when prop Damian Harries powered his way over for a try converted by Jameson and there was very little between the teams at the interval with Cardigan leading by a single point but the game in general became very scrappy with the official in charge not allowing the game to flow.

Cardigan centre Emyr Harries put his team further ahead with his second drop goal of the season just five minutes into the second half before Jameson replied once again but there was little to cheer for the supporters in attendance with very little decent rugby of note.

Rogers, who enjoyed a fine game added another penalty and he then produced one of the brightest moments of the game when he scampered over for a try which he converted to put his team almost out of sight to complete an individual tally of sixteen points. Jameson completed his hat trick of penalties to make the final score 24-16 to Cardigan.

The Cardi’s remain in third place in the table four points behind leaders Milford Haven but they have a game in hand as their match with Pembroke Dock was called off last weekend due to the ‘Dock’ not having enough players to raise a team. Had this game gone ahead Cardigan would now surely be leading the table at the half way stage of the season and on course for promotion.

Coach Colin Horscroft said he wanted to be judged on two years at the helm and he is on course for getting the job done in that time frame and promotion is certainly a possibility but there is still a long way to go and a few tricky matches to come.
