BOXING DAY RUGBY FEAST

Cardigan 34 Cardigan Exiles 31

The very large and enthusiastic Boxing Day crowd were treated to a feast of running rugby as the two teams played in the traditional festive spirit and thousands of pounds were raised for charity as part of Cardigan RFC’s 140th year Anniversary Celebrations.

The match started in dramatic fashion with an excellent try in the clubhouse corner rounded off by talented three quarter Dafydd Evans, a big player at the King George in days gone by and there were plenty of familiar faces who turned out for the exiles.

Amongst the former Cardigan players were Carwyn Thomas, Nathan Murphy, James Russell, Barry Evans, Geraint Davies, Nathan Ladd, Dylan and Aled Richards, Jac Lewis, Huw Davies, Dan Martin, Rhys Hogsden,Carwyn Phillips, Owen Jones, Sion Hurley, Amlyn Griffiths, Fraser Rees, Gethin Davies, skipper Dylan Davies and several others.

Cardigan captained by Llyr Griffiths were just a bit sharper and more organised than their opponents but there was not much in this hard fought but exciting tussle and honours were even at the end despite the score line, although there were a few amongst the exiles team who thought that they had been robbed of victory by some dodgy decisions!!

After the match there was an auction of sporting memorabilia and the proceeds of the day will be split between a fund set up to support first team hooker Rhys Brock in his rehabilitation following a stroke several weeks ago and the Cardigan RFC local charity which this year is Cardigan Swimming Pool.

Cardigan RFC said that they were thrilled that the day, which was blessed with fine weather, had gone off so well and one of the organisers and players Gethin Jones who has been instrumental in setting these charity events up along with a number of senior players said:” I would like to offer thanks to everyone that supported and helped organise the day, the raffle and the auction.

“Also a big thank you to our sponsors for the day and the players- it was a fantastic day and a fantastic game”.
