SKIPPER IESTYN INSPIRES MAGPIES

Costcutter League round up.

A superbly struck free kick from Cardigan Town captain Iestyn Evans helped secure a hard fought 1-0 win for a young Magpies side at Aberaeron.

Evans who was one of the stars for Town in the Costcutter championship winning team of last season managed to curl a shot around the black and ambers wall and into the net just before half time and this goal proved to be decisive.

Both Aberaeron Reserves and Cardigan were denied the services of several regular players and this offered an opportunity for the likes of teenagers Johnny Rees, Sam Everton and Jack Miller to don the black and white strip and they acquitted themselves well against a determined home side who could have salvaged a point if they had converted the few chances they created.

Felinfach appeared to be heading for their third win of the season before a late penalty secured a valuable point for their opponents New Quay.

The milkmen took the lead midway through the first half when Keiron Boyers capitalised on a goalkeeping error from the greens and they dominated after this but the hosts were unable to take advantage of a number of golden opportunities that came their way.

This inability to put these chances away came back to haunt Felinfach later in the game when New Quay were awarded a soft penalty which was converted with some 15 minutes to go and the game ended in stalemate.

Cardigan Reserves were denied victory when opponents Ffostrasol Reserves pinched a goal in the latter stages of this competitive fixture at the King George Field. The Magpies who were missing six regulars due to the first team being short, took time to settle but they went ahead when veteran midfielder Justin Evans dribbled past three defenders before he tucked the ball away into the corner of the net.

Town created a number of decent chances in the second half but they were kept out by a resilient Wanderers defence and the visitors bounced back and managed to score at the other end to seal a point.

Llandysul Reserves were forced to come out fighting in the second half of this tough encounter against Lampeter Reserves after going a goal down just before half time. The visitors who have enjoyed a rich vein of form in recent weeks conceded a sloppy own goal but they made amends early on in the second half when front runner Mathew Newbold was afforded time to turn in the box and curl his shot around the Lampeter keeper.

The visitors struck again soon afterwards when Iwan Jones netted with a superb shot that was palmed into the net by the keeper but Lampeter came back strongly and were unlucky not to score when keeper Dafydd Williams managed to pull off a fine save.

For Llandysul Dan Broniman in the heart of the midfield enjoyed an excellent game as did defender Paul Jones.

Bargod Rangers Reserves edged out their Crannog counterparts thanks to a goal from Mydrian Williams and a hat trick from Llanboidy striker Sion Thomas helped steer his team to a 7-1 win over Felinfach Reserves. Others to cash in on some generous defending at Cae Dandre  were Declan Harries, Ollie Latham, Rhodri Lloyd and Frazer Wyatt. James Morgan netted for the visitors.
