POPPIT ARE WEST WALES CHAMPIONS.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR POPPIT SLSC.

Poppit Sands Surf Life Saving Club enjoyed a clean sweep in the recent West Wales Surf Life Saving Championships winning the three main events namely the Nipper Shield, Junior Shield and the overall competition.
The Poppit club actually hosted the Championships which have now been running for over 20 years and the Teifi Estuary athletes have been very consistent as they have lifted the overall title for the last six years taking over the mantle from Porthmawr who won for the seven years prior to this.

The popular event is hosted in a different place each year and this year competitors had an enjoyable day in what were challenging sea conditions but ideal to test their skills and putting into practise what they have learned in training on beaches across West Wales.

Competitions range from both sea and beach events and include – surf ski events, board races, surf swim, run wade run event, run ski run, run swim run, beach run (1k), beach run (500m), beach sprint, relays, beach flags.

There are currently 72 members in the Poppit club aged from 7 -21 and members train on the beach from June until the end of September and in Cardigan Swimming pool during the winter months.

Traditionally the teams are made up of Poppit, Newport, Aberystwyth, Porthmawr, Llanelli, Aberporth and Tenby.

*On 5th September  2016, Surf Life Saving Association of Wales finally gained International recognition by being welcomed into the ILS (International Life Saving) family by being elected to Corresponding Member status.  Their staging of the European Championships last year was a big help towards this aim and in years to come SLSA Wales and it member clubs will have many opportunities to benefit from this membership.
