LAMPETER WOMEN TARGET BRITISH ISLES TITLE

Lampeter Bowling Club will be flying the flag for Wales tomorrow at the British Isles Bowls Championships in Edinburgh and hopefully another chance to get one over the old enemy.

Rhian Jones, Melanie Thomas, Carolyn James and Anwen Butten  who are the reigning Welsh rink (4’s) champions will be looking to add the British crown to their impressive list of titles but they face a tricky hurdle in the opener.

The Welsh Dragons who all play for Lampeter in the Ceredigion Llan League meet Jersey in a preliminary round of the fours in the morning and the winner of this match will then take on Ireland in the semi final later in the afternoon.

The four that comes out on top will then go head to head with  England or Scotland in the final.

Butten at skip is a former Commonwealth Games medallist and a member of the

successful Welsh rink who lifted a silver medal at the Six Nations event held in New Zealand recently. Butten will lead a four that includes Melanie Thomas, the youngest member of the quartet who only a few months ago reached the final of the World Junior Mixed Pairs final in Australia and brought home a silver medal. Jones at lead is an experienced international and consistent performer as is James who plays at three.

The four Lampeter bowlers will take part in the British Isles International Team Series from Sunday onwards when they will play for Wales in the team format (24 players) against England, Ireland and Scotland.

Butten who has been chosen to captain the Wales team for the very first time said she is relishing the challenge and added:” I am excited about going to Scotland to play in the British Isles fours and I also feel very honoured to have been selected by the players as team Captain for Wales at the series in Edinburgh.
